04 ITAIRL van der Ende
Italy were defeated in the first upset win of World Cup 1994 by the Republic of Ireland. Mario van der Ende faced a large challenge to keep concentration from first whistle to last (the searing heat of all games notwithstanding), but besides that he didn't face an especially demanding World Cup match, with both nations just focused on football. Funnily enough - in 1990 I doubt that any of the three cautions he issued would have been given (50' was a specific directive)! The players accepted his quite authoritative style, as his decisions let them play without great interference. Good job by the Dutch referee.
Both linesmen were very busy, but our director decided not to replay any of their offside decisions! No option but to assess their performances as expected level.
Solid performance in a rather easy-going match from the looks of it. The no penalty call did look correct as well based on the available footage.
