12 GERESP Filippi
Ernesto Filippi Cavani was appointed to referee the quite sonorous Germany - Spain match where a draw represented a positive afternoon for both nations. A technically strong piece of football meant that Filippi's approach revolved around letting them play, and he did that well, presenting an unobtrusive style of officiating. His disciplinary choices were not terribly predictable, and he bore (Germany's) dissents without any reaction back. On a manner and presence level he did not offer very much, but it is impossible to say whether that was a conscious choice of this game or a wider deficiency. Awarding a penalty at 27' would have been a crucial mistake.
Not too challenging an afternoon for the two linesmen - Venancio Zárate was correct not to disallow the Germany equaliser; Ernesto Taibi wrongly flagged in the first half.
Perhaps the least impressive refereeing I have seen so far, sadly. Filippi at no point convinced me that he had any line regarding challenges, especially since Spain committed for than a few heaby ones. Some quite obvious cautions even outside of that were also missed (blatant LoR Handball by Salinas, Trip by Strunz, Dissent by Klismann). No real personality shown to compensate for that.
